Vliegtickets.nl wins WUA’s smartphone orientation study on flight tickets to Barcelona. In April 2018, 200 consumers were asked to capture their experiences when searching for an airline ticket to Barcelona on their smartphone. By attracting many visitors to their website, Vliegtickets.nl manages to achieve considerable profits despite having a lower conversion rate than their direct competitors and wins this study with an overall Web Performance Score of 69.

Cheaptickets.nl is first runner-up with a score of 68. Their website is visited almost as often (85%) as Vliegtickets.nl and even has a higher conversion rate than Vliegtickets.nl, but scores significantly lower in our customer experience themes.

Smartphone-only study

Whereas earlier studies on plane tickets to Barcelona by WUA were conducted on desktop. this study focused specifically on what customers experience when they search for tickets on their smartphone. In a desktop study we conducted in February 2017, Cheaptickets.nl and Transavia.com also made our top 3. Vliegtickets.nl, however, performed less well on desktop and finished 4th.

Transavia.nl and KLM.nl provide best customer experience

Transavia.nl reached 3rd place. This provider has the highest conversion rate and knows best how to convince their visitors. “It’s immediately clear which airline you’re flying with, what prices and quality you can expect, and their website works great.” – Respondent about Transavia.com.

KLM.nl and Transavia.nl provide the best customer experience, especially in First Impression. KLM.nl scores high in Brand and excels in terms of professionalism, expertise, and service.

Goal and relevance of this research

The goal of this research is to exactly map the digital experience of potential customers who search for a plane ticket to Barcelona on their smartphone. It is important to capture the consumers’ choices and their reason why choosing a specific company. WUA worked on a proven model for the last 10 years, which shows as precisely as possible what customers want, whatever are the best practices and the obstacles per provider. A custom-made rapport is available within two weeks, including a get-to-work workshop on location and an accompanying presentation.
